*COMPLETED EXHIBITION* ~ I was honoured once again to be  selected to take part in the “oneTree 2017” project – an exhibition and sale of hand-crafted artisan furniture pieces and woodwork items of all kinds:

“oneTree 2017”  took place from November 16/2017 to January 31/2018 at the Robert Bateman Centre in downtown Victoria BC.

Pondering Art

Pondering art while sitting on the”Offset Bench” in front of”Everglades” (oneTree 2015)

A juried woodworking exhibition/show/sale, featuring furniture-makers, musical instrument makers, carvers, sculptors, and other wood artists.
Held in the gallery space at the Robert Bateman Centre – “in and around” the permanent displays of gorgeous Robert Bateman paintings, this is a “one-of-a-kind” event – a mix of different media, blurring the line between artist and maker. Unique.

“oneTree” is a collaborative effort of the Robert Bateman Centre and Live Edge Design (in Duncan BC). The original exhibition (2015/2016) honoured the life of one western bigleaf maple tree which grew on a farmstead in Cobble Hill, BC. This tree was cut down for safety reasons (it was quite rotten) and the lumber was sawmilled, dried and dimensioned into usable planks and slabs at Live Edge Design. About 40 artisans used wood from this one tree to craft their pieces…

…this time around  (2017-18 version) the tree is a large walnut from the Rockland area of Victoria – also threatening to fall and land on the house it grew next to for over 100 years! The tree was again cut down for safety concerns, and subsequently saw-milled into planks and slabs, and kiln-dried at the Live Edge Design facility. The walnut was made available to the latest crop of  chosen woodworkers to purchase wood  for “oneTree 2017″… an amazing journey for about 50 artisans involved – all using wood from the same tree.   A show not to miss if you love wood and hand-crafted woodworking.

Next “oneTree Exhibition” is planned for 2019 (dates not confirmed yet!)

Here is my completed piece ~ I call it “Black & White” – a “butler” cabinet to be used in a front entrance or hallway for storage of hats, scarves, gloves, keys… or bottles of rare whiskey! It celebrates the stark contrast between the dark brown heartwood and the white sapwood of this walnut tree. All of the “light-coloured” wood in this piece is natural walnut sapwood – that is, except for the big “white” diamond block on each side of the cabinet – these blocks are both cut from the oneTree2015 maple tree (leftovers!) and connect the 2 oneTree events.

This is the pile of walnut slab wood that I started with – lots of smaller branch type pieces and a fair bit of sapwood…
